The Sunday Reset Is Not a Date

Laundry, meal prep, and a face mask are maintenance. Do not confuse the servicing of a life with the living of one.

The internet has spent a decade selling a picture of a person in a robe, folding towels, with something simmering. It is captioned as self-love. It is not.

It is admin. Necessary, pleasant, occasionally lovely admin — but admin. You are servicing the machine so it runs another week. Nobody would call taking your car in for an oil change a date with your car.

The test

Three questions, and a real date clears all three:

Did you leave? Not strictly required, but nearly. Home is where the maintenance lives. The friction of leaving is most of what makes it count.

Was there a start time? An open-ended afternoon that becomes reading becomes napping becomes the phone is not a plan. A plan has an hour attached to it.

Would it have been a good outing with someone you liked? This is the sharpest one. If you'd be faintly embarrassed to have invited a friend to it, it was probably maintenance.

Why the distinction earns its keep

Because you can do the reset every Sunday for a year and arrive at the end of it perfectly rested and never once courted. The maintenance version asks nothing of you. That's what makes it comfortable, and that's the tell.

Masterdating asks something: put on the shoes, make the reservation, sit in the exposure for four minutes, take the whole time. The asking is the mechanism. Remove it and you have a nice afternoon and no evidence.

Do both

None of this is an argument against the robe. Do the laundry. Simmer the thing.

Just don't file it under the wrong heading and wonder, in eleven months, why nothing has changed.
